Pierre Grimes and the Noetic Society

Overview

The Noetic Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit group with members in Southern California and around the world, who have been inspired to study Homer, Parmenides, the pre-Socratics, Plato, the neo-Platonists, and other perennial philosophers and mystics, not for academic reasons, but for personal spiritual growth. The society was founded by Pierre Grimes, PhD in 1967, and was incorporated in 1978.

Dialogue(s): parmenides Chapters: plg;hyp1 Sections: 135d,135e,142a Attendees: Pierre, Barbara, JulieH, Eldar, Alex, JeffS [This was a great session, and my notes were scratchy again. I want to come back and re-do them. Anyone wants to contribute some, I'll take 'em!  Also, 2nd day in a row meeting at Panera.  Lots of background noise and music. So today I put a Shure headset on Pierre (left ear) and a Shure MX omni-directional table mic out for the rest of us (right ear).   -JS] q1:...

I almost did not post this recording, as it was so hard on the ears and so difficult to follow the discussion.  In meeting with the manager previously, he had agreed to turn down the music and let us study when we stop by.  Instead we suffered the most bangs and background cacophony of any place we'd yet been.  As...

Dialogue(s): parmenides Chapters: hyp1 Sections: 137c-138a Attendees: Pierre, Barbara, JulieH, Eldar, Regina, JeffS Synopsis 0:00:30 Some initial chit-chat 0:06:45 Start of study The "14": Pierre hands out a worksheet he has done, outlining the 14 (maybe 15) movements (or steps, or 'cycles') from One to Self, reflected, he says, also, in the Theology of Plato. We try to follow, and read through the Parmenides paragraphs, following the reasoning, but without yet "analyzing"....

We started into Chapter 3 of Book 2, but ended going back to Chapter 1 of Book 1, because of Pierre's contention that the main issue with Proclus is that “he cannot reconcile One and Self”. Synopsis Pierre leads the Noetic Society Parmenides study group through another session of study. Lately we've been taking a break from the Parmenides, going through Proclus' Theology of Plato (*) instead, in order to see how Proclus lays out the 14 orders of gods implied in the Parmenides. Today we read Book 6, Chapter 22. From Barbara: There was a chart and a part of another--ran out of paper, had some more but PG didn't want to stop for installation so he wrote on the side of 2-10-20 and the...

First, however, Regina asks a question about P99-103. The main issues we get into in the 2nd part are: the unlimited-ness of the One (and therefore of the Self), with the physical analogues of straightness and circularity how Parmenides' pattern of dialectic...

Dialogue(s): parmenides Chapters: hyp1 Sections: 137c Attendees: Pierre, Barbara, JulieH, Regina Notes Pierre set an assignment for the First Hypothesis though we didn't go into the first except to read the opening two Parmenides. Synopsis Eldar explores a very important message from the Dream Master today with Pierre's help. [This was originally going to be an NSSAT (Saturday morning chat) but Pierre had to leave early today and could only stay for 1 hour, and Eldar had not gotten his dream in last night.
